ORANGE COUNTY business websites.

We checked the websites of 1,497 independent Orange County businesses, from restaurants and dentists to repair shops and law offices, for what a customer on a phone and a search engine notice first: whether you can call with one tap, how fast the page appears, whether it is accessible, and whether the address still works.

Findings

WHAT WE
found.

One request to each homepage on October 10, 2026, then Google PageSpeed Insights on a phone.

  1. 01

47% of homepages have no tap-to-call link. On a phone, a number written as plain text has to be copied or retyped. For restaurants, salons, and repair shops, where customers often call before they come, it is usually the cheapest fix with the largest effect.

  2. 02

251 of the 1,790 websites listed for these businesses (14%) no longer work. 134 addresses no longer exist, 102 return an error or do not answer, and 15 are parked or for sale. Some of these businesses have closed or moved, but a dead link on a map listing costs the ones that are still open.

  3. 03

In Google’s PageSpeed test, which simulates a mid-range phone on a slow mobile connection, the median homepage takes 10 seconds to show its main content; Google’s target is 2.5 seconds. 88% take longer than 4 seconds. The median PageSpeed performance score is 56 out of 100, 34% score under 50, and only 5% reach Google’s “good” mark of 90. Real visits fare better than the test: of the 667 sites where Google has data from real visits, 45% are rated fast overall. Large, uncompressed photos at the top of the page are the most common cause of a slow first screen.

  4. 04

44% score under 90 for accessibility in the same test. The most common failures are low-contrast text (56% of sites), links with no readable name (42%), and images with no text alternative (17%). All three are usually fixed once, in the site’s template.

  5. 05

195 businesses (13%) load an accessibility overlay, the toolbar that promises to make a site accessible. 166 of the 194 we could score still fail at least one automated accessibility check with the overlay running. In April 2025 the Federal Trade Commission ordered one overlay maker to pay $1 million for claiming its tool could make any website meet accessibility guidelines.

  6. 06

31% have no search description and 22% have no main heading. Half (50%) give search engines no structured business details, such as hours, address, and phone, in the page code.

  7. 07

19% of the homepages that show a copyright year show 2023 or earlier, and 9% show 2019 or earlier. An old year is not a fault on its own, but it can make a site look unattended.

Getting it right

THE BASICS,
done well.

These 16 homepages pass every check in the review: they score 70 or more for speed and 90 or more for accessibility on Google’s test phone, let a phone visitor tap to call, and give Google a description. They are examples, not a ranking, and none is Endcap’s work. Where a site credits its designer, we name them.

For business owners

WHAT TO FIX
first.

Six changes, in the order that usually brings the most calls for the least work.

Check your website
  1. 01

    Make the phone number tappable

Link every phone number with tel:, in the header and footer, so a phone visitor can call with one tap. It takes minutes in any website builder.

  2. 02

Check the website on every listing

Open your Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Yelp, and map listings, and make sure each one links to the address your website uses today.

  3. 03

    Shrink the first image

The photo at the top of the homepage is usually what makes a phone wait. Export it at the size it is shown, in a modern format, and let it load first.

  4. 04

Write a title and description for each page

Say what the business is and where it is, in the words customers search with. That text is what Google shows under your link.

  5. 05

Fix contrast and link names in the template

Most accessibility failures live in the theme, so one change fixes every page. An overlay does not change the page underneath it.

  6. 06

Add your business details to the code

Structured data for your hours, address, and phone helps search engines and AI assistants describe the business correctly.

Businesses: every shop, restaurant, office, trade, health, leisure, and lodging business in OpenStreetMap with a website tag, inside the Census Bureau’s Orange County boundary, as of October 10, 2026. We removed chains and franchises (OpenStreetMap brand tags, and any website used by three or more listings), government and school sites, and links to social media, ordering, or booking platforms, leaving 1,893 websites. Each homepage was requested once over https, falling back to http. 103 sites blocked automated visits and are excluded, which leaves 1,790 tested and 1,497 that loaded. Tap-to-call, headings, descriptions, structured data, overlays, and copyright years were read from the homepage code as served; a site that adds these with JavaScript after loading may be counted as missing them. Speed and accessibility come from Google PageSpeed Insights (Lighthouse, mobile) for 1,475 sites. Cities come from each listing’s address, or the nearest city within 4 km. We publish totals only; no business is named.

FAQ

QUESTIONS,
answered.

Anything else? Ask us directly or text Noah at (425) 233-0769.

Which businesses did you check?

Independent businesses inside Orange County that have a website listed in OpenStreetMap, the open map used by many apps: restaurants, shops, dentists, salons, law and accounting offices, repair shops, hotels, and more. We left out chains and franchises, government, schools, and links that point only to a social media page or a booking platform. That left 1,893 websites; 103 blocked automated visits and are not counted.

Can I see how my business did?

We do not publish results by business. You can run the same checks on your own site with our free website check, or ask us for the full results for your site.

Does a tap-to-call link really matter?

On a phone, a plain-text number has to be copied or retyped before it can be dialed. For businesses that take bookings or orders by phone, a tappable number is one of the simplest ways to turn a visit into a call.

Will an accessibility overlay protect my business?

An overlay adds a toolbar on top of the page but does not change the page itself. In April 2025 the Federal Trade Commission ordered one overlay maker to pay $1 million for claiming its tool could make any website meet accessibility guidelines. Fixing the template is the reliable route. This is general information, not legal advice.

Why do so many listed websites not work?

Domains expire, businesses change their web address or move to a booking platform, and the old address stays on map listings and directories. Some businesses in the count have closed. If yours is open, check every listing points to your current site.

How often will you update this review?

We plan to run the same checks again in spring 2027 and publish the change for each figure.
